She said 4-year-olds at the school are a mixture of VPK and private pay students. For the school year, the VPK enrollment was already applied for the school year so the distance learning option was not impacted. In pre-school classes, Willenbrink said many of the school's activities are phonics, singing and movements in the songs.

At the Scottsdale Academy, the school year began this week. At Title I schools, the additional fee is paid through Title I funds. Most parents of VPK students are choosing the district's half-day option because they're not comfortable with their children being in school for a full day, Brunner said.
